Malta Public Transport carried its 50 millionth passenger on Thursday 6th December, marking an important milestone in mobility in Malta.

“Fifty million passengers in one year is an impressive achievement for our operation in Malta. Our strategy has always been to take advantage of our international experience and adapt it to the local context, and we are very proud that we have achieved these positive results,” said Konrad Pulé, General Manager of Malta Public Transport.

This has been another record year for public transport in Malta, with the numbers projected to exceed 52 million by the end of the year. These numbers mean that Malta Public Transport registered a 30 percent increase in passengers since 2015, the first year of operation.

This increase in passengers can be felt across various groups of passengers including locals and visitors alike. The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects reiterated "This Government believes that public transport is an important means that can help in the challenges brought about by traffic and congestion. We also believe that free public transport would benefit many families, therefore just like in 2017, during the year 2018 we have free transportation to the 18 year olds, and we also extended this scheme to include all those aged 16 to 20 years. It was an initiative that yielded important results – this initiative means that more than 21,000 young people saved more than €1.5 million and benefited from more than 3.6 million free trips.

"Therefore we decided to build on these successes and in the year 2019 we will be allocating more than €3 million to give free public transportation to anyone between 14 and 20, with more than 27,000 young people benefitting from this measure. This same benefit is also extended to anyone over 20 years old and studying full time, and discussions with the entities concerned are also underway to offer free transportation to those with a disability. We will continue to work to improve these numbers, and together with the operator we will work to further improve this service."

The lucky passenger was greeted at the Valletta Terminus by Malta Public Transport General Manager Konrad Pulé, who presented her with the gift. “A big thanks goes out to all our employees as this success would have not been possible without their dedication and commitment”, explained Mr Pulé. “I would also like to thank all our customers, and I assure them that we will continue workinghard to improve our service even further.”
