Malta will not budge on Brexit deal – Muscat

Tuesday, 11 December 2018, 12:16 Last update: about 6 years ago

Malta will not budge on the proposed deal for Brexit, although when necessary more clarification will be given, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said on Tuesday during a cabinet meeting at Transport Malta's headquarters.

Speaking at the beginning of the cabinet meeting, Muscat said that the government was closely following the developments in the United Kingdom in relation to Brexit, after the vote on the deal in the House of Commons was postponed by British Prime Minister Theresa May yesterday.

He said that that whilst Malta obviously cannot intervene in the decisions of the British people, the government will be discussing the matter in cabinet and will remain in contact with the European Council and European Commission to ensure that preparations would be at their best both in the case of the proposed deal being accepted by the United Kingdom, and in that case of a no-deal Brexit.

Muscat said that he wanted to put the minds of Maltese citizens living in the United Kingdom at rest and ensure that with a deal or without, the government will be making sure that these citizens would face no repercussions.  The same can be said, Muscat added, for British citizens in Malta, with the Prime Minister saying that there exists no though whatsoever of any "draconian" measures against British citizens living in Malta.

Speaking to The Malta Independent some days ago, European Affairs Minister Helena Dalli had said that Malta was "prepared" for a no-deal Brexit if that eventuality occurs.
