Mechanical Mosta Rotunda among 25 cribs on exhibition at Razzett Tal-Markiz

The Mosta Rotunda is the standout feature of an impressive mechanical crib, one of 25 cribs at an exhibition being organised by the Ghaqda Filantropika Talent Mosti held at Razzett Tal-Markiz in Mosta.

Made and operated by Giovann Muscat, the mechanical crib goes though a full musical routine which is set in the environment of a typical Maltese village, with Mdina overlooking it. A turnstile then rotates to reveal Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus in front of the Mosta Rotunda, which recently became a Basilica.

A host of other cribs form part of the exhibition, with each crib having its own style, setting and, in some cases, quirks. One crib for instance is housed inside an old television set, whilst another feature three cute felines as well. Another one features a set of almost larger than life figures instead of the traditionally sized crib figurines. This latter crib was made by Jimmy Mifsud, who was a long-term member of the group but unfortunately passed away a month or so ago.

Another prominent piece is a contemporary art piece made by Jennings Falzon. Titled ‘Dominion’, it’s a unique art piece which besides showing Emmanuel, also displays the virtues of triumph, celebration and unity. It will also be up for sale, with all the proceeds going towards a charitable cause.

The Ghaqda Filantropika Talent Mosti operates out of Razzett TalMarkiz, holding various exhibitions every month. The group was originally founded in 1983 as a pageant group called “Talent Mosti”, but then the enthusiasm waned and the group had to, for a time, close down.

It was given a new lease of life however in 1990 when Joe Bartolo, who is today still the organisation’s president, and Joe Borg who organised various performances within the town of Mosta. The group took on its philanthropic moniker in 1998, and since it has raised a total of €75,000 for various charitable causes such as ALS Malta, Puttinu Cares, Malta Hospice Movement, Malta Community Chest Fund, and Caritas.

The exhibition, at Razzett TalMarkiz, is open every day between 5:30pm and 8:30pm, whilst on Feasts and on Sundays it will be open between 9:30am and 12pm.
