The Gozitan village of Nadur has offered a place of shelter and refuge to Sicilian villagers who have been displaced by the most recent earthquake in the area.
Zafferana Etnea, which has a population of roughly 10,000, was hit by an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale on Wednesday, only days after the volcano Mount Etna erupted. The earthquake left a number of damaged buildings and several people without a roof over their heads.
The Sicilian village recently signed a twinning agreement, with a delegation from Zafferana Etnea being in Gozo just two weeks ago.
Nadur mayor Edward Said said that the village was ready to help in any manner that they could, including by housing those left homeless due to the damages. On Thursday morning, Said said that it seems that all those families who have ended up without a home had been provided with a temporary place of refuge, but he said that the village remained ready to provide assistance in any way required.
