Libyan escapee detained under arrest

The man who escaped from police custody two days ago when being detained at Qormi Police station was arraigned in Court today.

Libyan national Abdulsalam Ben Hamed, aged 45 years, was arrested just over 24 hours after his escape. He was apprehended by the police at the Qormi Park and Ride.

Ben Hamed, who lives in Cospicua, was charged with having stolen a vehicle on 28 December and with having caused damage to the same vehicle at Qormi, as well as with escaping from the custody of a police officer on 4 January.

The accused was also charged with contravening conditions imposed by the Court when he had been granted bail in October last year against a €1,000 deposit and a €10,000 personal guarantee.

The accused denied the charges, and was not granted bail.
