Three years after its opening, Speaker highlights 'shocking' damages to Parliament building

Several areas in the parliament building are showing visible issues caused by faulty work done during construction three years ago, Speaker Anglu Farrugia said today.

Sharing photos of instances of rust, leakages, and even mould, Farrugia insisted that the Maltese people deserve to know about the shocking and extraordinary damage to the parliament building, which had been paid for by their taxes.

“After three years, this kind of damage should not be plaguing the building," he said.

Farrugia stressed that the damages were not caused by any lack of maintenance, also noting that there were ongoing court cases against the contractors that worked on the building, and that no repairs can be carried out until a decision is reached in court.

Areas of construction such as the glass panes and doors were also installed incorrectly, he said.

Apart from issues with internal systems in the building like electronic equipment, problems with the roof of the second storey, the parliamentary chamber, the emergency exit stairway, the Opposition’s room, the subterranean level and the bridge that connects the two buildings are the main areas that suffered the most issues from the rain.

Farrugia said that the responsibility of the damages will fall on whoever authorised the particular works during the building phase.
