The Planning Authority has given planning permission for a new footbridge to be constructed across Vjal l-Avjazzjoni, in Luqa. The 11 meter bridge will ensure a safer environment for passenger movement around the Malta International Airport and students attending the new ITS campus which is sited at the former head office of AirMalta.
The bridge will also reduce traffic accumulation which results in the extremely frequent use of the existing pelican lights in the area, the PA said in a statement.
The bridge will have two helical ramps on either side built out of reinforced concrete and spanned over with a steel structure. The visual aim of the ramps is to have a continuous ribbon emerging from the terrain leading to the bridge structure. The concrete will be finished in a
white smooth finish. The structure spanning the road section will consist of a tubular structure in light yellow, with the final aim being of a landmark structure.
The bridge and ramps will be divided to house pedestrian and cyclist traffic thereby ensuring the safe passage of both simultaneously. The ramps will have quarter landings in order to ensure mobility for persons with special needs.
