New high-tech cranes to reduce noise pollution in Birzebbuga

The Malta Freeport Terminals showcased 15 newly-acquired Kone Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTG's) this morning, which, apart from being faster and safer than conventional cranes, are considerably quieter.

Part of the huge €31 million investment in new equipment and infrastructural works, the cranes which stand over 27 metres high, are equipped with rubber wheels and white noise sounders that are much gentler on the ear when compared to the beeper alarms on the older RTGs, benefiting the surrounding environment and residents of Birzzebbuga. The new cranes which will be in full operation in March, will complement the existing 50 RTG's which are already in operation.

Malta Freeport Terminal CEO Alex Montebello said that following complaints from Birzebbuga residents, the white noise sounders would automatically start working after sunset. He highlighted that such an investment came at an appropriate time when the Terminals are operating at elevated capacity in a highly competitive environment, and that the Maltese Freeport is one of the busiest in the Mediterranean. He said that "the Freeport once again broke records again in terms of throughput in 2018, handling 3.31 million TEU containers."

Investment for both Freeport and residents

Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi highlighted the importance of the Freeport's contribution towards Malta's economy and competitiveness, and that such an investment would not only improve the Freeport's performance, but also improve the quality of life for the residents of Birzebbuga. He also highlighted the social responsibility initiatives with the Freeport to embellish Birzebbuga, such as investing in a proper car park between the free port terminals and residential area of Birzebbuga.
