The Nationalist Party has put forward proposals to improve the sustainability of the agriculture sector, and help promote local produce.
The proposals were put forward by PN MP Edwin Vassallo and PN MEP candidate Peter Agius.
The PN's proposals are based on the use of EU laws which permit the promotion of local produce, through technical assistance to farming communities and seasonal product promotion. Another proposal, they said, includes the use of EU facilities to promote the Maltese product abroad.
Edwin Vassallo said that during 2018, profit for farmers reduced by 9%. He said that this situation is concerning, as when the profits for farmers reduce, we risk losing fresh Maltese produce.
Peter Agius said that farmers are facing major difficulties due to government's carelessness in both application for EU funds and government not using EU tools for promotion of local agricultural products.
The proposals will be explained in detail to agricultural associations, and directly to farmers in a series of planned meetings, they said.
