Ta’ Qali National Stadium goes green – sort of

Monday, 21 January 2019, 13:12 Last update: about 6 years ago

An unusual sight greeted supporters as they attended this weekend’s crunch fixtures at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali, with the stadium seemingly taking a greener turn as of late.

Pictures uploaded to social media show vegetation growing through some of the seats in the stadium, with the shots most likely snapped in either the North or South end (these ends are the only ones with a mass of white seating).

One person posted the photos, with tongue-in-cheek, on social media saying:

“Thumbs up to the Malta Football Association for joining the green movement around the world and helping Malta improve its air quality by planting plants and trees into the national stadium unused seats. Fantastic idea and helps combat the concrete jungle Malta is turning into.

10/10 for the brilliant idea and execution”

This weekend saw a bumper crowd of just over 2,700 supporters attend the National Stadium, as Valletta and Hibernians played out a crunch top of the table clash, with the Citizens emerging 2-1 winners.

This section of the stadium is hardly ever used, and was opened yesterday for security reasons.
