Man grievously injured after towing line breaks at Freeport, hitting tugboat

A 61-year-old man from Marsaskala was seriously injured on Wednesday in an accident at the Freeport.

The police said two 61-year-old men, one from Marsaskala and one from Birgu, were working on a tug boat along with a 36-year-old man.

The vessel was pulling a cargo ship.

At around 1.30pm, the towing line broke and hit the tug boat.

The 61-year-old man from Marsaskala was taken to Mater Dei Hospital with an Ambulance and later he was certified as suffering from grievous injuries.

Police investigations are still underway.

In a statement, Malta Freeport said: “Malta Freeport Terminals was informed earlier today that a crew member aboard a tugboat, operated by Tug Malta, sustained an injury. The Freeport duly assisted by dispatching a nurse to the scene and is aware that the issue is being addressed by Tug Malta and the relevant authorities.”
