The PLAKKASTORJA project was inaugurated today by Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici and Parliamentary Secretary for Children, Sport and Voluntary Organisations Clifton Grima.
The PLAKKASTORJA project is being followed through by the group Wirt iz-Zejtun and involves affixing 50 metal plaques with information on the historic building they are attached to.
Speaking at the inauguration, Bonnici said that it is thanks to such initiative such as this that local organisations can keep on promoting local culture and traditions.
“These 50 plaques hold important messages and help us to continue caring for our local heritage. We are working to keep giving our support to such activities which help our culture become more accessible to members of the community.”
Grima added projects such as this help nurture Zejtun’s local heritage, particularly amongst the residents.
“The determination and dedication of the individuals that do this work with voluntary organization are essential to uphold human dignity.”
The information on the plaques are in Maltese and English, and QR codes will also be available for scanning with mobile phones to access further information on churches, historical building and houses.
The PLAKKASTORJA project was done as a collaboration between Wirt iz-Zejtun and the Local Council of Zejtun, and was partly financed (80%) by the Voluntary Organisations Project Scheme.
