Labour MP Anton Refalo has refused to say whether he believes he should remain an MP in light of reports of alleged assault.

Last month, news reports read that Refalo allegedly assaulted his son after being informed that the latter was distributing photos of his former girlfriend. According to reports, Refalo was informed about the images by the woman’s father.

This newsroom previously contacted both the government and the Labour Party, who insisted that they should not go into Refalo’s “private” matters.

This newsroom spoke with Heritage Malta Chairman and MP Refalo yesterday and asked him about the reports and whether his position as an MP would still be tenable if there would be a court case on the matter.

“I have been in politics for 30 years. I have struggled and have been hurt in the past. But this question is purely a family matter and I am not going to comment on it.”

This newsroom pressed the MP on whether he should remain an MP if there would be such a case, as if there is an assault charge that would be an alleged criminal offence. “This is a personal and family matter. I ask you, do not mention it to me.”

Serving as Gozo Minister between 2013 and 2017, Refalo is one of parliament’s longest-serving MPs, having first been elected in 1987.
