National Celebrations Foundation announces 2019 events

Justice and Local Councils Minister Owen Bonnici has announced the National Celebrations Foundation’s 2019 events.

This coming year, he said, a number of events and activities will occur to celebrate milestone historic events, including the 15th anniversary of Malta’s accession to the EU, 100 years since the end of WW1 and Sette Giugno, the 40th anniversary of Freedom Day and 70 years since the declaration of human rights.

Bonnici, speaking at the event, said that the national celebrations are not just an exercise in romanticism. “We have an obligation to commemorate the events which helped form this country.”

The events announced include, among others, a 60 minute documentary analysing the events surrounding Freedom Day, a PBS mini film festival with themes relevant to Freedom Day and Sette Giugno, A symposium where the historical and socio-political importance of Sette Giugno will be discussed, a feature film is about the Sette Giugno events – with the trailer to be released this year and the film in 2020,  and others.
