In a statement on Sunday, Partit Demokratiku gave their two cents on the current situation new parents find themselves in when having to choose between employment and child-care responsibilities.
"Choosing to bring children into the world is a decision that should, and most times is, taken responsibly."
They note how Malta has indeed made it easier for those couples who have difficulty conceiving naturally to have their own biological children by offering the IVF service at Mater Dei, and on has also began offering "free" childcare services so that parents can go out to work.
PD Leader Godfrey Farrugia insisted that this does not solve the burning issue that even with both parents in gainful employment, many still cannot make ends meet.
MEP candidate Martin Cauchi Inglott echoed Farrugia's comments, going even further by maintaining that parents return home after work "exhausted and drained", and with "little energy left to spend some quality time with their children".
"Children are being brought into the world, and parents are being forced to leave their upbringing in the hands of others because of the financial burden of paying off the loan for even a humble residence."
A culture shift in mentality is also needed, they noted, pushing for fathers to be encouraged to support the mothers of their children in the children's upbringing.
MEP candidate Camilla Appelgren pushed for incentives to be given to employers by the State to give their employees better working conditions in order to be able to spend more time with their family.
"Parents should be supported and given a real choice to bring up their own children particularly till the age of 6, should they so wish, without being forced into financial dependency or utter destitution or being punished by obstacles to their career progression when they resume employment."
