Agones SFC, who have now firmly established themselves as the trail running race specialists in Malta, hosted the second race of the Eurosport Trail Running Series in Birzebbugia on a chilly Friday evening.

Whilst the thought of running for approximately 6 kms on a chilly Friday night around the valleys and country lanes of Birżebbugia might not sound appealing to all and sundry but it did attract nearly one hundred fifty athletes ready to experience another trail run, this time at night.

Armed with head torches, the athletes were split into three waves to ensure that little bottlenecks were created in some of the narrow parts of the route which included a mix of downhill offroad, flat on road and downhill country roads.

In Men's Category Ryan Farrugia (Raptorz Running Club) lead the way followed by fellow team mate Pierre Chicco who clocked in nearly a minute after Farrugia. In third place was Gerald Grech who followed thirty seconds after Chicco.  These results mirror the same placings obtained in the first race of the Series in Buskett.

Meanwhile in the Ladies' Category, Tara Abdilla clocked another win and placed eighth overall.  Abdilla was followed by Carmen Hili who crossed the finish line nearly three minutes behind Abdilla. With Anna Skinner, who placed third in Buskett, not taking part, third place was taken up by Bronwyn Hunter who gave a good performance to beat some of the athletes who took a better placing in the first race.

Athletes were treated to drinks and snacks courtesy of Agones SFC and Al Fresco Restaurant and an environmentally friendly finishers medal. The Medals and trophies were produced by Gibiltarian artist Phillippa Shaw,  out of drift wood coming all the way from Morocco to Spain. The lanyard was made of string which is environmentally friendly.

"We are pleased to be a Club that hosts environmentally friendly races. Trail Running is all about enjoying the environment, respecting it and appreciating it. Routes will be marked with Bio degradable tape and o plastic bottles or cups were handed out at the finishing line" explained Warren Muscat, President, Agones SFC?.

Caroline Zammit, representing Agones SFC presented the trophies and prizes to the winners.

The next race of the Eurosport Trail Running League will take place on Saturday 2nd March at 3pm in Munxar, limits of Marsascala.  For more information please visit www.agones-sfc.eu
