A Maltese man has been jailed for four years in Poland for killing a pedestrian while driving under age and under the influence of cannabis.

The accident took place last year, when the man was still 17-years-old. The accident took place in the town of Bielawa, near Warsaw. The victim was 77.

A Polish court found that the man, named only as Pietro C, was driving without a license and insurance, was under the influence of drugs and was going twice over the speed limit.

He was sentenced to four years in prison and was also ordered to pay €6,921 to the wife of the victim. He was also banned from driving for life.

The Maltese man had been held under preventive arrest ever since the accident.

According to reports, the man had been visiting his father, a businessman, when the accident took place on 3 June 2017.

He is expected to appeal the sentence, with his defence team reportedly complaining about the “excessive sentence” and incorrect street signage.

It also said that the drug test was carried out weeks after the accident, and that it had not been authorized by the accused.
