Referee Joseph Agius hospitalised after being attacked by Qala player during GFA Div. II match

The Gozo Football Association Division Two match between Oratory Youths and Qala was abandoned after Qala Saints player Emmanuel Cordina punched referee Joseph Agius.

The incident happened 63 minutes into the match.

Referee Agius had just shown a second yellow card to Qala player Cordina who reacted by punching the match official.

Agius decided to abandon the match with Oratory Youths leading 4-0. The victim is a member of the police corps.

The Malta Football Referees Association condemned without the attack any reservations. It said the official was taken to hospital for treatment.

In a statement, the MFRA will investigate and discuss the case internally and does not exclude taking further actions relating to this attack.

The MFRA expressed absolute solidarity with Joseph Agius.
