Din l-Art Helwa appeals for funds to repair damage caused by storm at historic sites

Wednesday, 27 February 2019, 15:23 Last update: about 6 years ago

Some of the historic properties restored and managed by Din l-Art Helwa have sustained damage during the recent storm.   The NGO is appealing to the public to donate funds to enable the organisation to meet the costs of urgent repair.

The historic chapel of the Annunciation at Hal Millieri, limits of Zurrieq, will not be open to the public on Sunday 3rd March as falling trees have damaged its paths and rubble walls during the recent storm.  Its iconic conifer tree at the entrance was uprooted by the wind.  Fortunately the historic chapel and its frescos sustained no damage and work is in hand to clear the passage and reinstate its walls for the forthcoming annual Feast of the Annunciation to be held later on in March.  Strong winds uprooted ancient trees also at the Msida Bastion Garden of Rest causing disruption to pathways, and rubble walls have been damaged in the moat at Torri Mamo in Marsascala.  The cost of repair is estimated to amount to several thousand euros.

However, volunteers are busy preparing for the normal weekend activities and are busy working to clear fallen debris to have sites well prepared for the weekend.   The Msida Bastion Historic Garden in Floriana will be open to the public for its monthly talking tour on Saturday 2nd March from 0930, and also for the first Sunday of the month on 3rd March.

Following its success last Saturday, before disruption by the storm,  the Artisans Market will be again set up at Torri Mamo this coming Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4.30.   See more on  https://www.facebook.com/events/290804588253733/

The Church of Our Lady of Bir Miftuh at Gudja will be open as usual this Sunday between 0930 and 12 noon.

Din l-Art Helwa is asking the public for funds to assist it with its work and anyone wishing to donate can send a remittance by cheque to Din l-Art Helwa, 133 Melita St., Valletta or via bank transfer at HSBC MT76MMEB44336000000033181181001, BOV MT51VALL22013000000040021787427 and APS MT02APSB77024000892010892010012
