The Labour Party welcomed the nomination of its former deputy leader George Vella as Malta’s next President of the Republic.
In a statement, the PL said that Vella is known for his integrity and whose wealth of experience in public life and in the international sector will enable him to serve the country as its Head of State in the best interests of the nation.
The PL praised outgoing President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca for her impeccable work.
Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant in a statement of his own praised Vella, saying that he took on challenges courageously and with honesty. He said that he is sure that Vella will distinguish himself, and be an agent of unity for the Maltese and Gozitans. Sant also spoke highly of President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.

The nomination of the President of the Republic is the perogative of the Prime Minister and this is formalised in Parliament, the Partit Demokratiku said.
Dr George Vella was always a capable politician.
In the context of the present political scenario, it would have been prudent had the choice been a person perceived to be close to all citizens of Malta and Gozo, PD said.
