Woman’s Day ‘celebrates human rights’ – Partit Demokratiku

Friday, 8 March 2019, 09:10 Last update: about 6 years ago

International Woman’s Day is a day to globally celebrate and consolidate human rights and most importantly to give due recognition to those who care for and fight for them.

Partit Demokratiku said it celebrates this day officially on an annual basis not simply because it recognises the need for the struggle for equitable treatment of women in all settings, including but not limited to the domestic environment, the professional and career-oriented sphere, the social milieu, the politically-inclined profession, and the gender-race value discrimination reality.

“Human rights need to be upheld and respected without prejudice. Malta still lacks behind in the gender equality index. Moreover few are those who work full time or sit at boards that have a direct influence on decision making”, stated MEP candidate Camila Appelgren.

“In 2017, Parliament had rectified the Istanbul Convention, yet little seems to have been done at the ground to execute women’s human rights effectively. Domestic violence and sexual harassment of women is endemic. We need to resolve this immediately.” stated Hon. Dr Marlene Farrugia.

PD is proud to help amplify, “Better the Balance, Better the World”, which is the International Women’s Day 2019 call to act for a gender-balanced world.

This is a day where we celebrate the social, cultural, economic and political achievements in favour of women whilst we raise awareness against bias, inequality and exploitation of women.

Partit Demokratiku said it is committed to a real and concrete positive change, where women are effectively seen to lead in all spheres of life. Only conscious collective action and shared responsibility can bring about meaningful appreciation of human dignity across the spectrum, gender-based rights included.
