The Alfred Mizzi Foundation today announced the launch of the Charles Miceli Scholarship in Social Solidarity in memory of Miceli himself, who passed away suddenly exactly a year ago.

The scholarship will take the form of an annual €5,000 investment aiding those who wish to pursue a post-graduate degree or a continuous professional development course that could lead to a certificate of attendance or diploma.

To be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must – amongst other requirements – have a minimum of five years paid or voluntary work experience in any area that contributes to social solidarity.

Charles Miceli was known for his persistent and tireless work with the poor and the vulnerable and was the head of the Caritas prison inmates programme and the chairman for the Anti-Poverty Alliance.  He was heavily involved in the Dar il-Hena Foundation –a triumvate between the government, Caritas and the Alfred Mizzi Foundation – which was specifically set up to run the Dar Papa Frangisku soup kitchen and night shelter.  The soup kitchen caters for between 40 and 50 people every day.

In a press conference held at Dar Papa Frangisku, Antonello Gauci, a trustee of the Alfred Mizzi Foundation, expressed satisfaction that this scholarship would keep Charles Miceli’s memory alive through the work of activists and those involved in social solidarity.

Pauline Miceli, wife of the late Charles Miceli thanked the foundation for keeping with its commitment towards addressing the needs of the disadvantaged and in the spirit of Charles Miceli’s unconditional love for the poor.

Pauline Miceli also said that they did not just want academics to apply for this scholarship, but also volunteers who have truly dedicated themselves to working for the poor.

Applications for the scholarship are now open and will close on 30 June 2019.  All those interested should seek further details and the application form by visiting https://thealfredmizzifoundation.com/
