The Chamber of Engineers has stressed the need for more awareness and training provided to professionals in relation to fire prevention, suppression and control together with the appropriate design-related aspects of fire prevention in buildings.

The call was made in view of the latest fire incidents in the residential and non-residential sectors.

“This is another call in addition to previous statements published both on social media as well as press releases, following the incidents in Malta and abroad. The Chamber would also like to stress the importance of engaging fire competent engineers from the onset of a project in order to ensure that fire associated risks are minimised and to ensure fire safety in case such unfortunate events develop. In addition, those involved in the management of facilities should ensure that life safety systems are appropriately maintained to be able to fulfil their function. All this in view of ensuring public safety,” the chamber said.

The chamber also urged the government to introduce the Fire Safety Act without further delay.

“We confirm our commitment and support to the Building and Construction Authority to push forward the preparation and enforcement of proper building regulations,” the chamber said.
