Gozitan swimmer Maria Pia Saliba has won Malta's first gold medal at the Special Olympics in the 25m butterfly, Special Olympics Malta reported on Facebook.

The Special Olympics is different from the Paralympics. The Special Olympics is for individuals with intellectual disabilities, whereas the Paralympics is generally for athletes with any disability, including physical, and only at an elite level.

Later in the day, another gold medal was won by the Unified bowling team comprised of Peter Mallia, Philip Gruppetta, Amanda Cini and Jessica Farrugia.

A third gold medal was announced later in the day, won by Ann Ebejer in the 200m race.
