Semaine de la Francophonie in Malta

Wednesday, 20 March 2019, 08:59 Last update: about 5 months ago

Francophonie is a term referring to people, countries, organisations and governments that use French as an administrative or teaching language. Among these French-speaking countries we may mention Belgium, Luxembourg and France in Europe, Quebec in Canada and many countries in black Africa. Last year Malta gained observer status at the OIF, the Organisation International de la Francophonie, reinforcing the importance of the French language in Malta.

Every year the Alliance Française de Malte Méditerranée and the French Embassy in Malta celebrate the French-speaking world with la Semaine de la Francophonie. Traditionally, during this week, several activities and events are held to expose the local public to French and the diversity of the Francophone cultures around the world.

This year we have a variety of activities to attract a vast public. The language competition "La Plume d'Or" will have students of French wrecking their brains on a large spectrum of tenses, vocabulary and famous Francophone personalities. This language competition is organized by the association "Défense de la langue française" and is open to students of the Alliance Française de Malte-Méditerranée. The winner will get to spend a week in Paris.

On Wednesday 20th March, in collaboration with the French Embassy, Spazju Kreattiv and Institut Français in Paris, we shall be screening the French film "Place Publique". For this special event, Agnès Jaoui, the film Director and actress Nina Meurisse will be present among us. The film will be followed by a debate where the audience may interact with the director and the actress. This event is made possible especially thanks to the French Embassy in Malta.

Friday 22nd March, we shall be welcoming Cherif Mbaw and his band. They will be giving a concert at Surfside in Sliema, starting at 21:00. The entrance is free of charge and everyone is welcome. This will be a great occasion for people to mix and mingle in a Francophone environment.
