A total of 1.18 million contraventions, ranging from speeding tickets to education-related fines, have been given out in Malta since the beginning of January 2016.
Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici was answering questions tabled in parliament by PN MP Robert Cutajar.
Cutajar asked how many citations were given out by Community Officers in every region between January 2016 and February 2019, organizes separately by year.
The information tabled by Bonnici was broken down by region (Center, Gozo, South, North, South-East), year (2016-2019), and type of citation (Wardens, Warning, Speed, CCTV, Police, TM, Education).
Wardens were the leading source of tickets contraventions in every region and in every year from, at least, 2016, and trailing the group with the least number of issued citations was in the Education category.
The Central district has been responsible for the majority of citations with a grand total of 461,223 fines in the past 3 years, and Gozo having the least with 32,661 fines.
In spite of the population increases of the island, the number of contraventions given out has decreased overall in almost every category, except for those issued by CCTVs and Transport Malta.
