'I can never agree with Article 7 procedure against Malta'

Peter Agius Wednesday, 3 April 2019, 12:25 Last update: about 6 years ago

In a message from MCAST, EP President Tajani's speechwriter and PN MEP candidate, Peter Agius expresses his disagreement with MEP Sven Giegold who is calling for Article 7 TFEU proceedings against Malta. Article 7 TFEU proceedings would mean the suspension of Malta's voting rights and may lead to the interruption of EU funds to Malta.

An EU veteran, Agius argues that Maltese students would ultimately suffer the consequences of Article 7 proceedings. Dr Agius highlights various projects funded by the EU funds package negotiated by Dr Lawrence Gonzi improved Maltese students' education and skills, such as the Institute of Business and Commerce, the Institute of Applied Sciences and the ICT building at MCAST Paola and the Xewkija MCAST Gozo campus.

Agius emphasises that the government can take multiple measures to improve Malta's reputation, as highlighted by the Venice Commission and GRECO reports, by taking immediate action against allegations of corruption and money laundering and adopting good governance practices. Dr Agius underlined that the Nationalist Party will always defend Malta's national interest on the local and international level.
