Sliema Wanderers returned to winning ways after defeating Qormi by the odd goal in five. It was a merited win for the Blues who were slightly better with their opponents now practically doomed to play First Division football come next season.

This match was a must win for Qormi after consecutive defeats against Tarxien Rainbows and Hamrun Spartans. On the other hand Sliema succumbed to a last minute defeat against Birkirkara in their last match having been on a run of seven positive results.

John Mintoff was missing for Sliema whilst Claudio Pani suspended. In the first round the Blues ended on the winning side defeating Qormi by two goals to nil.

Sliema did the early running and as early as the 3rd minute a Varela shot was tipped over the bar by an alert Cassar. But it was Qormi who took the lead in the 12th minute when a Wellington De Oliveira rising shot went past Aquilina.

The Wanderers reaction was an immediate one and four minutes later they were already on level terms. Marzouk found Mark Scerri who miskicked an acrobatic shot but the ball rolled into Muchardi's who fired home from close range.

And in the 22nd minute Jonathan Pearson took a loose ball and  from the edge of the area  hit a grounder which found the right corner of the net. Sliema were now in control with Qormi trying to come forward but finding a stubborn and organized Sliema rearguard.

They finally drew level a minute from the end of the half when off a Mano Micallef corner Davide Mansi rose above friend and foe heading past a static Aquilina.

As was the case in the first half Sliema went on the offensive in the second period. And just past the hour they went in front when skipper Alex Muscat slotted the ball home from just inside the area.

Fifteen minutes from the end a Bangoura rising shot from an ideal position sailed over the bar. And in the 79th minute an Ashong shot from the left flank hit the side netting.

Qormi were unlucky not to draw level ten minutes from the end when off an Alessio Cassar cross a Bangoura headed effort hit the woodwork.

But in the 86th minute Sliema threatened once again when off a Marzouk corner Shaw's header just missed the target.

Till the end Sliema controlled their opponents keeping Qormi at bay. This win put them once again in contention for a European berth.
