Maltese MEPS need to ‘pull the same rope’ to attract investment - Muscat

Friday, 12 April 2019, 18:20 Last update: about 6 years ago

Irrespective of their political party, all Maltese Members of the European Parliament must pull the same rope to defend the national interests and attract interests towards Malta.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat made the pitch during a conference with Malta Business Bureau members whilst presenting the manifesto for the European Parliament elections regarding the theme of Business for Europe, Europe for Business.

Muscat said that there will always be criticism against the government, but criticism in the European Parliament by Maltese members should be done in a sensible and correct manner. He expressed that it was ironic, that the Opposition had said they do not agree with a German MEP who wants to use Article 7 against Malta, as this same German MEP was basing his discourse on the allegations made by the same Nationalist Party.

He said that European institutions are currently at a crossroad and that many leaders are trying to improve the protection of citizens, which he said is counter-productive. He also mentioned that there are people in European countries which are struggling and facing many challenges; and that there needs to be politics which supports and provides work for these people, and help them in an active manner.

He said that the European Parliament will be having the opportunity to discuss parent leave, and the balance between work and life, and that there together they will come up with a sensible solution which will reflect the reality and needs of these member states.

Simon De Cesare, the President of Malta Business Bureau, explained that the elected members of the European Parliament must maximise their resources, adding how competition and sustainability are the two key points of the Malta Business Bureau's manifesto.
