Watch: New proposal for motorsport race track at Hal Far

Friday, 12 April 2019, 13:56 Last update: about 6 years ago

Architecture firm Periti Studio today unveiled a proposal for a motorsport race track during a presentation to local motorsport enthusiasts held at The Hotel Excelsior in Floriana.

Last November, the firm had released an embryotic version of the proposal on social media and following a strong response from the motorsport community,  the firm said in a statement consulted with the Malta Motorsport Federation to further tweak and polish the proposal while ensuring it is in line with international motorsport framework and requirements.

The proposed race track was presented in detail during the presentation and a 3D animated video of the track proposal has now been released on social media.

Perit Nicholas Mallia explained that the starting point for the project was to identify a non ODZ site. It transpired that the Hal Far Industrial Estate is the only location that could potentially incorporate the track without causing an overspill onto ODZ land.

Perit Mallia explained that in this way, a race track would not have to take up any of Malta’s precious undeveloped land. He continued to explain that the proposal is in practice a fully-fledged FIA approved race track of 2.0Km or 3.1Km length that is suitable for motorcar and motor bikes alike. The facility includes an independent Go kart race track and a Road safety facility intended for motorists skills training.

“Naturally good planning requires a detailed study of the residual capacity of the Industrial Estate and discussions with the MIP (Malta Industrial Parks). In fact, we hope to be given the opportunity to discuss the proposal with the respective stakeholders and authorities because we are confident that this is the only viable site for a race track in Malta”

The Malta Motorsport Federation has also taken to social media to share the firm’s proposal  stating the following: “The #RoadSafetyandMotosportFacility proposal by Periti Studio track designed according to FIA & FIM regulations, within the industrial area of Hal Far. This proposal does not take any ODZ land. It incorporates an extension of 1km street along with a Road Safety facility and Criterium Cyclist track of 1km.

Perit Mallia urged all motor sport enthusiasts to stand together as one and help drive the message that a race track in Malta deserves serious consideration. He concluded the presentation by appealing to the respective authorities and stakeholders to consider the firm’s proposal and to be given the chance to further discuss the concept in the hopes that one day soon Malta could boast a motorsport race track of its own.
