Sant replies to Delia: ‘I was always against tax harmonisation’

Wednesday, 8 May 2019, 09:56 Last update: about 6 years ago

Labour MEP Alfred Sant said today that Opposition Leader Adrian Delia is wrong to say that he (Sant) was in favour of tax harmonisation.

“Since I became an MEP I have always spoken against tax harmonisation in the European Union states as this goes against Malta’s interests,” Sant said in a statement.

Sant said that in a televised programme he had said that the three PN MEPs had voted in favour of a resolution which says that the unanimity rule should be removed so that harmonisation tax policy is decided by a qualified majority.

This resolution, Sant said, is not in Malta’s interests as it is a direct threat against 25,000 people who work in the financial and gaming industries.

PN MEPs David Casa, Roberta Metsola and Francis Zammit Dimech voted in favour of this resolution, opening the gates towards tax harmonisation in the EU, Sant said.

He said he and the two other Labour MEPs, Miriam Dalli and Marlene Mizzi, had voted against.

Delia must be clear about the PN MEPs’ vote. Does he agree with it? Had he been informed? What was his reaction?

These are the answers the people are expecting, Sant said.
