Around 440 people have not yet received their voting documentation for next week's elections, PN Secretary General Clyde Puli said today, while stressing that the Electoral Commission must strengthen their resources to ensure that everyone is given their document.
Speaking at a press conference, Puli said that the Nationalist Party have received numerous complaints and concerns of individuals who have not received their documents, or have been provided with one document instead of two. "Around 100 people have been given a voting document for the MEP elections but not local council elections; whilst around 300 have the voting documentation for local council elections and not MEPs." He said that a great number of these people come from either Sliema or St Paul's Bay locality. He said that the Party has contacted the Electoral Commission yet they are waiting for a response.
He said that there is also an issue that not everyone is able to go to the Police station to pick up their voting document, and that family members cannot pick it up for them; yet ironically enough when police go from door to door they provide all votes for the family, he said. "The Party has noted that there is no form of planning. It is the individual's right that they are provided with their voting documentation; this lack of planning and resources is leading to a higher increase of people not voting."
Karol Aquilina said: It is important especially for those who have a disability or have mobility issues, that the commission goes to their houses to give them their voting documentation.". He also said that after these elections the Nationalist Party will be providing a number of amendments to the Electoral Commission to arrange registration, as there are still people who do not live in Malta listed as being able to vote.
