Traditional media bound by silence, but political messages abound on social media

Saturday, 25 May 2019, 09:16 Last update: about 6 years ago

The law states that no political message and advertising can take place on the eve of an election, known as the day of silence or day of reflection, and also on election day.

Traditional media are bound by this law and on Friday and today, there is an absolute silence on anything which is political, be it on the printed media as well as online news portals.

Media houses, including this one, have in recent years questioned the validity of this archaic law, but the powers-that-be have left it there.

If there was any need for yet more proof that this law needs to be changed one only has to take a look at what happened on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media outlets on Friday and today.

The social media has been and continues to be inundated with messages and advertisements from candidates contesting the European Parliament and local council elections, as well as those uploaded by their canvassers.

Such messages and advertisements are illegal, but is seems that the authorities responsible are closing both eyes to this situation, which gets worse with each election.

Traditional media has been put at a disadvantage in this respect.
