The Nationalist Party has registered “relevant progress” on the David Stellini co-option issue, Gozo candidate Kevin Cutajar said.
Cutajar and PN political coordinator Jean Pierre Debono last Saturday contested an internal party election to fill the seat vacated by PN MP David Stellini.
The PN’s executive committee chose Debono but the process has since been scrapped after allegations that it was rigged. The meeting was also marred by the resignation of the president of the executive committee, Mark Anthony Sammut, who called on the entire party leadership to step down. Party treasurer David Camilleri, who, Sammut said, should not have been allowed to vote, also resigned.
Speaking to The Malta Independent on Wednesday, Kevin Cutajar said he is still interested in the parliamentary seat but added that he had not been contacted by the PN leadership.
A spokesperson said the executive committee will have to meet again and vote again. The process, however, will have to wait until a new president of the executive committee and treasurer are elected.
In a Facebook post, Cutajar said progress had been made on the next steps that need to be taken. “Naturally, the issue is not closed but with cautious work we can get there and Gozo can retain what belongs to it.”
