The Ministry for Education has confirmed that Mathematics and Maltese examinations will take place in State schools, while examination papers have been prepared and corrected by professionals.

The Ministry was replying to questions sent by this newsroom regarding who will be correcting the examination papers.

Earlier last week saw Malta Union of Teachers release a statement that no Mathematics and Maltese exams will not be held in secondary schools as a result of the government failing to react to the complaints about a shortage of teachers.  The Union stressed that teachers were being over-worked and expected to give too many lessons, leaving them burnout and affecting their teaching.

While the Ministry confirmed with the newsroom that the papers will be corrected by professionals, MUT told the newsroom that the exam papers were commissioned to ‘unknown individuals’. Replying to questions sent by The Malta Independent, a MUT representative said that teachers and Heads of Departments of Mathematics and Maltese will not be involved in exams of their respective subject in State middle and Secondary Schools.

“The Ministry shall be delivering exam papers which were commissioned to unknown individuals on the eve of each exam and shall similarly be corrected by unknown individuals following the respective exams.”

Both MUT and UPE have previously expressed that the situation in the education department is one which is extremely worrying and that the Ministry have been warned regarding the issues for months.
