Labour Party MEP and Head of Delegation Miriam Dalli has been chosen to be one of the Vice Presidents of the European Group of Socialists and Democrats.

She is the first Maltese individual to hold such a position in the European Parliament, having received 101 votes from 130.

Dalli said that she is honoured that her colleagues in S&D put their trust in her to work for progressive and social politics.

"I will work to strengthen the success we have achieved together and also change the challenges we have ahead of us into opportunities," she said.

"We must persist towards an environmental economy, attract new investment, sustain new economies, protect our workers and prepare students for their future careers."

"This is what I promised I would work on and this is what I will be working to achieve," Dalli said.

S&D recently chose the Spanish Iratxe Garcia Perez as their President.
