Myself - My Body

Tuesday, 16 July 2019, 16:05 Last update: about 6 years ago

The pilot program Myself- My Body was carried out at the Inspire Foundation from January 2018 until July 2019, thanks to the support of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation (MCCFF); an educational program for individuals with an intellectual disability designed with the aim of promoting Safe, Healthy and Happy lives by providing sexual education, offering tools, insights and mechanisms to live and explore their sexual and social identities in a safe and positive way.

18 persons with disabilities have been the beneficiaries of this project, where the possibility of working, discussing and, above all, learning about sexuality and disability has been opened. At the same time, parent/guardian groups were also created in order to provide information and education which would help them support and empower the individual towards self-development and growth, thus providing a holistic programme which led to the desired outcomes and benefits.

Both, the results and the feedback obtained, have been positive, being able to observe an improvement in the acquisition of knowledge, which in practical cases could be translated as the incorporation of behaviours and practices that help us live happy, healthy and safe lives.

The project has been developed by Inspire professionals who received training, ensuring that the development of relevant expertise pertaining the subject of Sexuality and People with Disabilities was tailored to local and social needs.

In addition, the possibility of being able to carry out this project has continued to open the way to keep us working and learning in the area of sexuality and disability. As well as it has already enriched the lives of the participants of this project.
