‘Crucial that Maltese government recognises existential threat posed by climate change’ - PD

Thursday, 19 September 2019, 10:41 Last update: about 6 years ago

The Partit Demokratiku has highlighted their concerns about climate change in a statement.

"The climate crisis has nearly reached a tipping point, beyond which the world threatens to spiral into an unstoppable cycle of warming, which is predicted to lead to the collapse of civilization," the PD said.

"It has just become public knowledge that in all of Europe, the Maltese are the most concerned by climate change, and rightly so, because our air quality is among the worst in Europe. Partit Demokratiku is using the occasion of the global climate strike to publish the key strategies new and old which Malta must undertake urgently."

"Partit Demokratiku acknowledges that Malta punches above its weight diplomatically and in international politics. It must use all resources at its disposal to ensure Brazil meets its Paris Climate Accord targets and halts Amazon deforestation, by blocking the EU-MERCOSUR trade deal if necessary. We must push for stricter environmental legislation in Europe and with the G20 countries. Small island states are most vulnerable to climate change and Malta is no exception. Climate change and air pollution are directly linked and ultimately it is our health and quality of life that are at stake. Climate Strike in Malta should target air pollution," states Hon Godfrey Farrugia.

"Partit Demokratiku has already called for Malta to declare a Climate Emergency. It is crucial that the Maltese government recognises the existential threat posed by climate change. We must begin not only trying to prevent climate change, but we must also prepare for it. The Maltese people are ten steps ahead of the government as we are the most concerned in Europe about it. Will the government listen to the people?" said Timothy Alden.

Partit Demokratiku believes that concrete measures must be taken internationally and a zero tolerance approach to environmental destruction backed by political and trade pressure against countries like Brazil. "Nothing less will prevent us from losing Malta to the ravages of this crisis.
