Independent candidate Arnold Cassola has asked President George Vella to give a “word of solace and courage” to a “broken people”.
In a letter to Vella, which was copied to the media, Cassola said a word from the President is crucial at a time when the country is passing through dramatic times and is experiencing a “lack of legitimate leadership”.
Cassola said he understood that the President is not allowed to pronounce himself on the situation, but a “word of courage and solace” is necessary in the prevailing situation.
He said the President should consider stripping Muscat of the Gieh ir-Repubblika award which he said is given to every PM upon election.
