Monday, 2 December 2019, 20:59 Last update: about 5 years ago

Journalists covering the civil society protest in Valletta and later the manifestation by Labour supporters outside the party headquarters in Hamrun were threatened and harassed by people attending the two activities.

The Institute of Maltese Journalists issued a statement to condemn the threats and violence against journalists in the two activities

The IGM appreciated the work of police who stopped the incident from escalating in Valletta, where a journalist was attacked by a government security officer, and said that it can never be acceptable that journalists be interfered with or attacked while doing their work.

In Hamrun, journalists covering the Labour activity for The Malta Independent were harassed by Labour supporters while doing their job.

The NET News crew that was present at the PL HQ was chased out by supporters early on.

Drinks, and even glass bottles, were thrown at them as they walked away from the crowd. Party officials shielded them as they got out.

The IGM appealed for everyone to remain calm and for journalists to be allowed to do their work.
