Updated (2): Many parts of Malta experience power cut

Sunday, 29 December 2019, 17:53 Last update: about 5 years ago

Many parts of Malta experienced a power cut on Sunday evening. The cause is as yet unknown, and Enemalta did not give any details in a statement on Facebook.

People in San Gwann, Zebbug, Naxxar, Balzan, Marsascala, Attard, Swieqi, Msida, Fgura, Zejtun, Qawra and other localities reported that they have no electricity.

Lights went out just before 6pm.

In some parts, electricity was restored within a few minutes, in others it took longer. Electricity was restored to all localities at 7.04pm, Enemalta said.

In its statement, Enemalta said that it has experienced extensive interruptions in the electricity supply. At present, our ongoing technical personnel are working endlessly to solve this issue. Enemalta did not say what caused the power cut.

Two days before Christmas, there had been a nationwide power cut that lasted several hours.

Enemalta had said that there had been a fault on the interconnector between Malta and Sicily. It had warned that there was a possibility of further power cuts because the fault has not been repaired.

The company had saud that the damage incurred requires several weeks to be repaired. During this period Enemalta will have limited dispatch flexibility which could result in unplanned interruptions to the electricity supply in circumstances that Enemalta will have no control over.
