Saturday, 22 February 2020, 13:17 Last update: about 5 years ago

Work to repair the damaged interconnector between Malta and Sicily are progressing, Enemalta said in a statement.

Damage was caused to the infrastructure in December, and after tests were carried out, the repair works started earlier this month.

After the loading of the interconnector spares, last Saturday, works commenced on the repairs of the submarine cable, Enemalta said.

Works started early on Monday morning and the south-side cable had the damaged part cleared and subsequently, prepared for the jointing, by Wednesday. Works subsequently commenced on the north-side cable in preparation for the final phase of repairs.

This operation is being carried out on a 24/7 basis and so far, there were only a few hours of interruption due to unfavourable weather conditions.

In parallel with the works being conducted onboard the ASSO Atalanti and Ariande vessels, support tasks are also being carried out on land in the Magħtab and Ragusa terminal stations to aide the marine repair operations and also in preparation for the initial testing phase.
