Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri visited ongoing works which are now in an advanced state at the dry-standing area project in Xlendi. He said that the project will cost around €400,000 and is financed by the European Fund for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

Minister Camilleri explained that the main works consisted in the reconstruction of the dry-standing area, namely the excavation of the entire site, placing imprint concrete, and building a new chamber for the winch.

Minister Camilleri said that all devices at the entire site will be replaced, meaning the winch device and the surrounding lights, and that CCTV cameras will also be installed. The minister stated that “service pillars supplying electric power and water will also be introduced, so that fishermen can repair and maintain their boats in a more comfortable and safe way.”

The Ministry for Gozo also took into account fire safety, and thus a fence around three sides of the site was constructed in order to isolate the dry-standing area from the rest of the site in case of a fire. Minister Camilleri also explained that an oil separation tank was introduced so that oils originating when servicing the boats will not end up in the sea. This is considered as a useful component that will protect the environment.

Finally, the Minister for Gozo said that this project is expected to be finished and will be used by fishermen in the coming weeks before summer.
