No 5G testing is being carried out in Malta, Finance Minister says

No 5G technology tests are currently being carried out in Malta, Finance Minister Edward Scicluna said.

He was replying to a parliamentary question by PD MP Godfrey Farrugia, who asked which town or village had been chosen, in line with a request by the European Commission, for 5G testing.

Farrugia also asked when these tests would be carried out and what the government's position is on the WHO recommendation that no 5G system should be activated before testing shows that this would not have a detrimental impact on public health.

Scicluna said no local service providers or other operators are registered with the MCA to use frequencies for 5G testing.

Scicluna said the MCA has not received any direction from the health authorities to enforce stricter radiation emission standards than those recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) for 5G technology.

In 2018, the government had said that Chinese tech giant Huawei would launch 5G connectivity in Malta by the end of the year.
