Tuesday, 4 August 2020, 09:57 Last update: about 5 years ago

Ylenia Carabott will continue to play football outside of Malta, after signing with the Belgian side Royal Charleroi for the upcoming season.

The 31 year old attacker was plying her trade in Italy’s second tier last season with Chievo Fortitudo Women, and will now be playing in the newly-expanded Belgian Super League.

The Belgian Super League will be composed of 10 teams this season having expanded from six teams last season. Charleroi is one of the four new teams taking a place in the league.

Carabott will be the second Maltese player to play in this league, with Rachel Cuschieri being the first after spending a season with RSC Anderlecht – who have won the Super League for the last three seasons.

Carabott is one of the most prolific female attacking players to grace Maltese football: she was the top scorer in the league for eight seasons in a row before making her move abroad, and scored 328 goals with Hibernians throughout her spell with the Paolites.

She has been capped 83 times with the Maltese national team and scored 19 times.
