The Malta Union of Teachers said today that discussions on the implementation of Covid-19 measures in schools have failed.

In a statement, the MUT said that the Education Ministry is “repeatedly implementing measures in schools that are not what had been discussed while it is ignoring or failing to effectively reply to the hundreds of questions particularly about health and safety protection.”

It is clear, the MUT said, that measures related to Covid-19 are being implemented without due consideration to the wellbeing of educators, students and their families. The curriculum aspect is also being compromised, the MUT said.

The union said it had offered various solutions but these have been put aside, and what is being implemented goes against what was discussed, such as on how secondary school timetables are to be drawn up, high risk educators and supervision.

Preparations started late and the ministry is now in panic mode, the MUT said, adding that its council will be meeting later today.
