Watch: Bernard Grech sworn in as a Member of Parliament

Tuesday, 6 October 2020, 16:41 Last update: about 5 years ago

PN Leader Bernard Grech has taken the Oath of Office and is now officially a Member of Parliament

Bernard Grech thanked Ivan J Bartolo for giving up his seat for him.

Grech thanked his family who were present, and those who were unable to be due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Grech won the party leadership election on Saturday, replacing Adrian Delia as leader. He will assume the role of Opposition Leader tomorrow.

PN MP and former party leader Adrian Delia also spoke in Parliament.

He said that over the past two days he had time to contemplate his position as Opposition leader while not being leader of the Nationalist Party.

"I asked myself whether it is possible to have an Opposition leader for all of the Maltese people, and not just for half of the people. In the same way, are we capable of having a Prime Minister for all the Maltese people and not just half. This contemplation is one of the reasons I entered politics. This is why I wanted a different approach to politics."

He said that while the Opposition has the role being the government's critic, it can do so constructively. "In our work both inside and out of Parliament, the Opposition is doing a lot of constructive work to improve laws, so that when they come to pass they will be better."

"Even in our capacity as the Opposition, we show that in our work we are constructive critics, and the work we do is to improve the lives of all people.
