The Maltese Association for Parents of State School Students (MAPSSS) joins the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD) in condemning the discrimination being faced by students with a disability who will not be provided support services due to to COVID-19 operational and logistical matters.

MAPSSS reiterates its position that in this extraordinary time of an ongoing pandemic, MEDE should not create a situation that puts vulnerable children in a disadvantageous position.

In its discussions with MEDE during the summer months, MAPSSS had asked for a holistic plan on how schools will be able to pursue their mission of supporting vulnerable children and their families psychologically, socially and academically.

MAPSSS agrees with CRPD that COVID-19 school measures cannot be provided at the expense of students with a disability or those requiring specific support.

On Wednesday, the Commissioner for the Rights of persons with disability (CRPD) Oliver Scicluna said students with disabilities are being denied support through specific services at school due to social distancing rules,

"Covid-19 school measures cannot be provided at the expense of students with a disability or those requiring specific support," said Scicluna.
