A 54-year-old man was arrested by police on Wednesday in connection with a mugging on a 75-year-old man last month.

Police said in a statement that the arrest was in connection with an incident which happened on 7 May, when an elderly man was found sprawled on the floor in Misrah il-Barrieri in Santa Venera at around 11:30pm.

Hamrun district police found the 75-year-old with head injuries, and so medical assistance was required.

Preliminary investigations showed that the man was attacked while he was walking.  The aggressor brought the elderly man to ground and stole his wallet, which had some money in it.

Police said that after a number of days of investigation and analysis of CCTV cameras, they had successfully identified the alleged aggressor and arrested him.

The 54-year-old man who was arrested is currently being held in the police’s lock-up in Floriana and is expected to be arraigned before Magistrate Marseann Farrugia this afternoon.
