Friday, 4 June 2021, 11:13 Last update: about 4 years ago

Text messages extracted from Yorgen Fenech’s phone have been added to evidence submitted in the public inquiry into the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The inquiry board has now finished hearing witnesses. It will now be working on its report after receiving the last of the evidence on Friday morning.

The lawyers representing the Caruana Galizia family – Therese Comodini Cachia and Jason Azzopardi - presented the inquiry with two box files of phone records and messages from Yorgen Fenech’s phone, concerning individuals who testified before the board and held public office.

The files contained printouts of chats extracted from Fenech’s phone, as well as printouts that prove the existence of certain WhatsApp chat groups.

Lawyer Therese Comodini Cachia said, “this is just a very tiny minuscule selection... just 0.001% of what we have to go through.”

The exhibition of this evidence had been authorised by Magistrate Rachel Montebello on 31 May, she added.

Retired judge Michael Mallia, who is chairing the inquiry board, said that part of report will may be redacted, although copies will be given to the parties only. The conclusions, however, will be made public.

The inquiry board, which also includes chief justice emeritus Joseph Said Pullicino and Judge Abigail Lofaro, was set up in December 2019.

It has heard many witnesses, including former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, journalists and activists.
